We actively seek every opportunity to extend the life cycle of goods by reducing unnecessary waste in the FMCG value chain. By diverting perfectly good products from landfill, we enable responsible consumption, reduce emissions, mitigate biodiversity loss, and protect the natural environment.

191,000 tonnes of surplus food and drink was redistributed across the UK in 2023, up 15% on 2022. Just over a quarter of that (51,570 tonnes) was redistributed to cost-conscious customers looking to stretch household budgets, while the remainder went to charity.

In 2024, Huddled Group rescued and redistributed over 5.7 million surplus products that would have otherwise been wasted. Items included food, drink, household items, cosmetics, beauty and wellness products. Over 250,000 households bought from a Huddled Group business in 2024, making huge savings.

Did you know?

Food and drink waste is estimated to be responsible for around 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, while cosmetics and personal care waste accounts for 0.5%. In the UK, landfills contribute 27% of total methane emissions, which has 84 times the warming effect of CO2 over 20-years, contributing significantly to global warming and climate change.

In 2024, the volume of surplus goods rescued and redistributed by Huddled Group saved at least 16,000 tonnes of CO2e from being emitted by reducing unnecessary waste in the FMCG value chain. The majority of rescued items were food and drink.

The UK has some of the lowest biodiversity in the Western world having seen a 19% decline in species abundance since 1970, and nearly 1-in-6 species are now threatened with extinction. Climate change, pollution, and damage to land and sea use are all contributory factors.

In 2024, Huddled Group worked with over 140 retailers, manufacturers, and FMCG brands, buying their surplus stock, preventing perfectly good products from going to waste. By diverting items from landfill, we are helping to prevent biodiversity loss and land degradation.
