Food redistribution continues to rise in the UK. Between 2015 and 2020, redistribution to people via commercial companies grew by 66% and redistribution via charities was up 450%.

In 2023, 73% of food redistribution in the UK was distributed via charities and 27% via commercial organisations specialising in surplus good redistribution. The split over an eight-year period 2015-2023 was 35% commercial and 65% charity.

Retailers are the largest suppliers of surplus goods to redistributors, diverting 83,000 tonnes of waste in 2023, up from 68,000 tonnes in 2022.

Manufacturers represent the second largest supplier group, diverted 54,000 tonnes in 2023, similar to the 52,000 tonnes diverted in 2022.
